Onions… why’d it have to be onions? I didn’t know my first lesson would be so crazy! It was fun too, though. I didn’t entirely know what to expect in this lesson, but I definitely learned a lot! Read on to hear more about my experiences and to see pictures!
In this lesson, I learned how to slice and dice onions. For five days, I practiced on at least one onion a day. Each onion I cut in half, then used one half for dicing, and one half for slicing. I had to step away from the cutting board a few times because some of the onions were so powerful!
I noticed that, between day one of practicing and day five of practicing, I improved my skills in just a week! The picture on the orange cutting board above was one of my earlier in the week practices. The picture on the blue cutting board below was day five.
Since I had to practice all week, we had a lot of chopped onions in the house to use for food and recipes! My dad used some of the diced onions in his eggs for breakfast. We all enjoyed my chopping practice with a french onion soup my mom made, and we sauteed and mixed some onions with beans to be a taco salad topping.

Great blog Abby!! Next time you have to cut up onions try putting a piece of bread between your lower lip and teeth. This works for me. An older cook at a golf course I worked at told me about this trick years ago. Use a hearty bread for it to last longer in your mouth. Also, supposedly the flatter the onion is to signify that it’s a mild one. One of the grocers told me that too.

I see no blood on the cutting board. In my world that makes it a complete success. And I didn’t see any dog hair in the completed dishes, so double points! Will there be a public tasting of all your accumulated talents at the end of the semester?

Many years ago, I had to chop a TON of onions for an event that I was helping to host. My eyes were burning and crying!! I knew there had to be a better way… goggles!!!! I put on a pair, and no more tears or burning lol!!
